The Venice of the North
Saint Petersburg
The city was built in the early 18th Century on the orders of Tsar Peter 1. He had just defeated his enemies and was eager to create a new capitol that was western in location and character.
The city was built at a great cost in money and human lives and has since become a UNESCO heritage city.
